The relationship between reminiscence activities and depression of seniors in institutional care

Aim: The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between reminiscence activities (RAs) and depression in seniors living in institutional care. The rate of depression was studied in seniors over 65 years of age. Differences between experimental and control groups, each comprising 50 individuals, were assessed.

Methods: The Geriatric Depression Scale was used for data collection and identification of depression in the participants. Medical records were used to ascertain their age, Mini Mental State Examination results and psychopharmacological drug use, a significant factor affecting the rate of depression. Depression was evaluated by two measurements. In the experimental group, the measurements were carried out before and after completion of structured RAs. In the control group, the measurements were carried out at the same times but no RAs were provided.

Results: The overall prevalence of depression in all participants was 43%. In the experimental and control groups, the rates were 20% and 23%, respectively. After completion of RAs, the rate decreased by 4% in the experimental group. RAs were confirmed to lower the rates of depression in seniors in institutional care. Depressive symptoms were less frequent after RAs in the experimental group than in the controls.

Conclusion: Depression is a serious and life-threatening disease contributing to impaired quality of life of both seniors and their families. Correct diagnosis and treatment of depression lead to improved quality of life of seniors and their families. RAs are an important psychosocial non-pharmacological intervention which can significantly contribute to quality of life improvement.
